Composition

petalite (LiAl[Si₄O₁₀]) or spodumene (LiAl[Si₂O₆]) based, both lithium aluminium silicates

Properties

• lowers the viscosity of glass and glaze
• low iron content
• very low coefficient of expansion after firing

Applications

Ceramics: reduces porosity (in low concentrations); very low coefficient of expansion of the fragment (in high concentrations); lowers the coefficient of expansion of glazes and frits, increases gloss and dishwasher resistance; raw material for effect and crystal glazes

Glass: lowers the viscosity allowing a higher throughput; increases the gloss and dishwasher resistance; lowers the coefficient of expansion of glassware to almost zero

Metallurgy: lowers the viscosity of the slag in casting powders.
