Flame Retardants
Composition
Ankerpoort provides a range of flame retardants, each with unique actions based on various mineral raw materials
Portaflame®
Properties
- has flame-retardant properties as a result of the endothermic decomposition and release of water vapour on heating of the mineral on the one hand and the formation of a protective layer during the oxidation process on the other.
- endothermic decomposition at > 340 ºc
- natural product
- has smoke suppressant properties
- high boron content
Applications
Construction: bituminous roofing material: only as flame retardant or in combination with gibbsite
Plastics: works synergetically with other inorganic flame retardants. Strong tendency to form a protective layer during the oxidation process particularly in OH-bearing polymers; flame retardant in polyolefins (PE, PP), thermoplastic rubbers Ethylene Vinyl Acetate (EVA), Ethylene Propylene Diene Monomer (EPDM), calcium borate and rubber applications in mining
Portaflame® SG/G
Properties
- has flame-retardant properties as a result of the endothermic decomposition and release of water vapour on heating of the mineral on the one hand and the formation of a protective layer during the oxidation process on the other.
- endothermic decomposition at > 200 ºc
- chemically inert
- low specific gravity
- Portaflame SG: high whiteness, high purity
- Portaflame G: cream-coloured (suitable for less critical applications which do not require such high whiteness and purity)
Applications
Construction: flame retardant in bituminous roofing material and mineral building boards
Plastics: flame retardant in polymer floor and wall coverings, cable filler, polyurethane (PUR) foam and carpet backings; flame retardant in polyester (sheet and bulk moulding compounds - SMC, BMC) and moulding resins (epoxy, PUR)
Securoc®
Properties
- has flame-retardant properties as a result of the endothermic decomposition and release of water vapour on heating of the mineral on the one hand and the formation of a protective layer during the oxidation process on the other
- endothermic decomposition at > 300 ºc
- natural product
- has smoke suppressant properties
Applications
Plastics: flame retardant in thermoplastics (PP, PA), TP elastomers and rubbers, cable and wire insulation, electrical components, cable ducting and roof and floor coverings
Securoc® C
Properties
- high whiteness
- high purity
- platelet structure
- very fine
- endothermic decomposition at > 250 ºC (flame retardant properties)
Applications
Plastics: flame retardant for PVC and chloroprene rubber particularly in cable compounds for wire and sheath insulation; effective smoke suppression in polymers.
